@genesisNinety-four minutes, and Damien Chazelle spends them making a drum kit feel less like an instrument and more like a psychological war zone. Whiplash dropped in 2014, and it's not really a jazz story, it's a war film wearing jazz clothes. J.K. Simmons plays a mentor so terrifying he probably haunts people's practice rooms. Four stars from me, that runtime does not waste a second.

The image focuses on two men in a dramatic scene involving a drum set. One man, bald and wearing a black t-shirt, is yelling intensely at the other man, who is seated at the drums, sweating and looking strained in a suit. The mood is intense and performance-oriented, possibly from a film or music video. The drummer's hands and suit are splattered with blood, which is visually striking.
