Father's sacrifice revealed on Vienna night train

It was a freezing winter night in the 1940s. Only two people were sharing a compartment on the night train departing from Vienna: an elderly man in a worn-out coat and a young lawyer sitting opposite him. As the train moved with a rhythmic clatter over the tracks, the young lawyer pulled a expensive, gold-plated pocket watch from his pocket. He looked at the watch and let out a deep sigh. The old man watched the youth for a moment, then smiled softly: "That must be a very valuable piece, young man. But the look on your face tells me it carries a burden rather than value." The young lawyer looked at the watch in surprise. "You're right," he said. "My father left me this watch. He worked as a factory laborer his entire life. Before he passed away, he handed it to me and said, 'This watch is our family's most precious heirloom; never sell it.' I lived with the pride of this watch for years. But last week, when I took it to a watchmaker... I learned that its insides were made of nothing more than ordinary, cheap tin. My father left me a lie his whole life." The old man gazed out the window at the snow drifting through the darkness. He then pulled his own old, scratch-covered silver watch from his pocket and set it on the table. "Let me tell you a short story," the old man said. "Many years ago, there was a very poor craftsman. When his son got into law school, he wanted to give him a gift he could be proud of. But he had no money. He sold the only thing he owned—a real gold watch inherited from his own father. With that money, he covered all of his son's school expenses. To make sure his son wouldn't notice he was left without a watch and to leave him one last keepsake, he bought a gold-plated watch from a flea market—cheap on the inside, but shiny on the outside. He wore that cheap watch on his wrist with pride until the day he died." The young lawyer froze. He looked at the old man, then down at the watch in his hand. The old man smiled, slipped his silver watch back into his pocket, and as the train pulled into the next station, stepped off into the night without saying another word. That night, the young lawyer realized that the true value of the watch lay not in its inner gears, but in everything sacrificed to leave it to him.
