    Ukraine Leopard tank camouflage

Ukraine campaigned intensely to secure Western armor, but the strategic landscape shifted before delivery. Leopard tanks were once top priorities for Kyiv, with price tags near $10 million per unit. Cheap drones had already reshaped combat dynamics by the time these heavy vehicles arrived. Frontline exposure became too dangerous, forcing many units into concealment under camouflage nets while they await rare mission opportunities. Operational use has diminished significantly. Some tanks now function as costly recovery tractors, towing damaged equipment only during poor weather that grounds aerial threats. Personnel are pivoting roles in response. Approximately half of one battalion retrained to operate drones rather than drive tanks. A Ukrainian crew member concluded: "the era of tanks is over." The asymmetry is stark: inexpensive unmanned systems have grounded multi-million dollar armored fighters. Source: New York Times / Writer: Daniyal
