Messi and De Paul CONMEBOL COPA AMERICA USA 2024

Rodrigo De Paul describes Lionel Messi as 'humility in person.' He recalls a specific match between Valencia and Barcelona where the two were left alone in the penalty area arc during a corner. De Paul felt everything shaking because he was facing Messi. The Argentine broke the tension by asking, 'What are you doing, star? Everything okay?' De Paul replied, 'Everything okay, Leo, you?' and then asked if they would swap shirts later. Messi answered, 'Yes, yes.' This exchange happened around the 60th minute. In the 93rd minute, Messi sent in a cross that resulted in a goal for Barcelona, securing a 1-0 win. De Paul expresses anger because his team desperately needed the three points. After the final whistle, Valencia players had to stay on the pitch to greet the stands while Barcelona’s teammates went into the locker room celebrating. De Paul thought, 'That's it, that's it (the jersey).' But when entering the tunnel, Messi was waiting at the locker room door. He appeared as one of the opposing team members rather than just a winner. While his teammates celebrated inside, Messi took out his jersey and said to De Paul, 'Come on, Rodri, good game, congratulations.' He then gave the shirt to De Paul.
