Dumbledore never planned to smash the Resurrection Stone right away since it's a Hallow and not dark magic that needed erasing. He still destroyed the Horcrux hiding inside the Gaunt ring though. The reason he slid that ring onto his finger was pure grief and a desperate wish to see Ariana again. That move came with a heavy price because the curse nearly killed Dumbledore before he could contain the damage. Once the worst of it was under control, he concealed the Stone inside Harry's first Snitch for future use instead of tossing it aside.
