    Hope 2026 Na Hong-jin

Na Hong-jin made a two-hour-forty-minute movie that earns every minute of that runtime. Hope (2026) is the first thing in years I'd call a real movie, and the first stretch of it plays like a Korean Fury Road with police officers, hunters, and a presence near the DMZ that has no business being there. The practical-action work in that opening ninety minutes is the wildest stuff anyone's put on screen lately. Then the back half sits on you like a hangover, and honestly it's worth it. What happens: a village near the DMZ goes silent after wildfires. Livestock turns up torn apart. The police chief and his deputy land on a bear as the answer. The local hunters are sure they can put down whatever's out there. Nobody's guess holds up. It starts as a creature feature and ends somewhere a lot closer to a cosmic accident. If you came out of it hung up on the CGI, you were watching the wrong thing.
