Jamie Carragher on Manchester City guilt

Jamie Carragher says he's shocked the Premier League actually found Manchester City guilty of 114 charges but admits he wasn't surprised by the verdict since he always believed the club was at fault. He points out two main reasons why the outcome feels inevitable. First, the club claimed for years they were generating revenue on par with Liverpool, United, or Madrid, a feat Carragher calls impossible regardless of how many trophies are won. Second, despite repeated denials and claims that irrefutable evidence existed, the investigation dragged on for years rather than being resolved in a week if the proof was truly there. This delay suggests something substantial was hidden away. Carragher expresses sympathy for players like Kevin De Bruyne, noting he is one of the best he has ever seen and would have succeeded anywhere. Yet now people will likely put an asterisk on ten years of his career because of off-field actions that were told to him as acceptable when they weren't fine. The distinction matters here: this isn't about the supporters or the team. Manchester City has been a club for a hundred years and will remain one for another century. The issue lies solely with the owners who do not like hearing no, a fact evident in their internal emails stating they can do what they want. They come out acting shocked even though the evidence should have been released immediately. Until the current ownership moves away from the club, it is unclear how any stain on its reputation can be removed. The team will eventually move on, but the stain won't while those responsible remain in place.
