Funeral Parade of Roses 1969

When Queer Desire Meets Psychological Horror, that's the exact knot tied in Funeral Parade of Roses. Released in 1969 and directed by Toshio Matsumoto, this film drops you straight into Tokyo's underground queer scene where a gender-nonconforming character named Eddie navigates love, jealousy, desire, and betrayal across the 1960s. The narrative reimagines the Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex while blending experimental filmmaking, pop art, and documentary-style interviews to constantly challenge what cinema can be. Beneath the striking visuals lies a story where desire, identity, and fate collide in devastating ways, making every emotional twist feel disturbing. Described as beautiful, disturbing, and unconventional, the work is bold, surreal, and psychologically haunting. It isn't just a queer film; it stands as a landmark of underground cinema that still feels daring decades later 🍿
