8 Spanish gay films and series

What happens when the thing you want most is the thing most likely to destroy you? That's the thread running through this set of eight Spanish films and series, all circling dark desire and forbidden romance. Pedro Almodóvar shows up twice. La ley del deseo (1987) takes jealousy and possessiveness and lets them curdle into violence. Then Extraña forma de vida (2023), his short, where two former lovers meet again after 25 years and the old pull is still there. The older titles go hard too. El diputado (1978) has a closeted politician falling for a young hustler, which opens the door to blackmail and danger. Los placeres ocultos (1977) is a wealthy closeted businessman fixated on a younger man who identifies as straight, with money and power making everything worse. And Juego de amor prohibido (1975) runs on power games, manipulation, and erotic tension. History presses in on the rest. La bola negra (2026) jumps across three eras to look at forbidden love, queer identity, and how Spanish history and the Civil War left their mark. Alguien tiene que morir (2020), a miniseries set in Francoist Spain, pulls family secrets and repressed sexuality into the open. Las noches de Tefía (2023) draws from the persecution of gay men under Franco's dictatorship, and it holds imprisonment, survival, and memory together. If your taste runs toward queer stories where desire turns dangerous and obsession doesn't wash out, this is the edit 🍿
