Call Me by Your Name 2017

The thing that lingers after Call Me by Your Name isn't the romance itself, it's the quiet room after. Luca Guadagnino made this in 2017, and it's a coming-of-age story drenched in sun, but what it's really about is first love, wanting someone so badly it hurts, and the ache of having to let them go. 1983, Italian countryside, summer. Elio is 17, played by Timothée Chalamet, and Oliver is the American grad student staying with his family, played by Armie Hammer. The feelings that develop between them are the whole movie. Tender, sensual, emotionally powerful. But the scene that stays with me is Michael Stuhlbarg as Elio's father. His monologue about sitting with pain instead of burying it, about how heartbreak is the price of loving something real. That's the wisdom at the center of the film. André Aciman wrote the novel it's based on. The film took home the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. It's also one of the defining queer romances of this century, a quiet masterpiece about longing and memory that doesn't fade 🍿
