Arsenal job cuts after Arteta renewal

The part of this that sits wrong with me is the timing. Barely any gap between Arsenal handing Mikel Arteta a new four-year deal, complete with a raise and bonuses, and the club lining up as many as 60 job losses. That's roughly 7% of the 871 people on staff at Emirates Stadium, and while the technical side of the teams stays untouched, everyone else is left waiting. Arteta's framing is that the structure needs work to bring sporting success. Fine. But the money picture in London is the bit that doesn't add up: record revenues of £691 million, and the fiscal year still closed £1.4 million in the red. So is trimming jobs actually what competing at the top requires, or is it a call made to square a financial result? Hard to read that contrast as anything but a choice someone made. #MikelArteta
