Hairy pie dish beetle from Australia

Would you clock this as a beetle if it turned up in your garden? First read is a small bristle-covered piece of metal, not something alive, and yet the hairy pie dish beetle is real. It's an Australian beetle with a broad, flattened body, and the whole surface is packed with stiff hairs. That silhouette is what gives it the near-armored look, and it lands as one of the more curious insect designs nature has put together. The intimidating exterior is part of the package, and it doubles as proof that surprises sit in plain sight across the insect world. Beauty doesn't always arrive in the shape we expect either. Sometimes what shows up is wonderfully strange instead, and this one fits that description exactly
