Iran strike funding and the midterms

The Pentagon's 96-hour window opens Nov. 4, and the strike that follows waits on the other side of Nov. 3. What the midterms actually settle is who signs off on paying for it, and how long that money lasts. Trump has three carriers within range and a decision sitting behind the election. Susan Collins holds the Senate Appropriations chair and voted against Hegseth, while her Maine race against a logger is tight. That challenger's platform puts blocking U.S. tax money for Israel's military near the top. Mitch McConnell, who handles Senate defense appropriations, is leaving regardless. He has argued that financing the war via reconciliation can't be sustained. On the House side, Ken Calvert runs defense appropriations and is in a Republican-versus-Republican fight for a redrawn California district. Two Palantir executives gave $900,000 to his campaign. Should Democrats take the House, Adam Smith would reclaim the Armed Services gavel. Costs so far: $45 billion. Interceptor stocks are at 61%, and there's no path to rebuilding them before 2030. Any future funding has to clear those committees. With a Republican Congress, reconciliation keeps the money moving and lets Trump stay on his timetable. A Democratic House can't block a strike, but it can hold up replenishment bills and press for the base-repair data the Pentagon hasn't released. Voters in Maine, Michigan, Texas and one Orange County district effectively decide whether the next strike is funded for a month or a year. Source: Breaking Defense, OpenSecrets / Writer: Daniel
