    Joyland 2022 Pakistani queer drama

What Joyland keeps asking is whether the life you're living was ever picked by you or just handed over. That question sits under this 2022 Pakistani queer drama, which goes after forbidden desire, gender identity and the fight to be free inside a conservative society. Haider carries us in: married, from a traditional family, taking work as a backup dancer in an erotic theatre. Biba walks into that space, a transgender performer, and the two build a bond that's complicated and emotional and slowly rearranges him. The pull toward her strains his marriage and everything his family assumes about him. The cast is what sells it, believable and raw rather than showy. Biba matters beyond the plot too, giving transgender people real presence in queer cinema. And the Haider and Biba thread stays unresolved in a way that hooks you, forbidden attraction with no tidy answer waiting. Underneath runs the cultural weight, masculinity and marriage and gender roles and family expectations in Pakistan all pressing at once. The visuals stay intimate and the storytelling stays quiet, which is exactly why the emotional beats hit as hard as they do. Cannes felt it. Joyland became the first Pakistani film chosen for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, and it took the Jury Prize there. Identity, desires you swallow, what society expects, and the nerve to ask whether the path you're on was ever really yours. Have you seen Joyland? I want to know what you made of Haider and Biba's relationship #Pakistan #Movies
