The uncomfortable part of this argument is the test case, not the definition. Fear responses get filed under hatred when the writer says they're really the brain generalizing from experience and statistics, and that everyone carries stereotypes about some group without those being 'prejudices.' Then the scenario: you're walking through an American city after dark, a cluster of young Black guys heads your way, and the body tightens or the feet drift across the road. That's not 'racists' doing the work, per the piece, it's that stereotypes have to come from somewhere. Which leads to the closing line about ideology having to bend to what's actually there rather than the reverse. The framing of racism as an artificial construct built to block plain observation is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, and I'm not sure the street example proves as much as it's asked to.
