Wildwood is pulling way more than anyone expected at the US BoxOffice for a PG-13 artsy animation from LaikaStudios. The Fathom-distributed title brought in $8.9 million during its second three-day weekend, which is a 27% drop from opening but still a massive win compared to how other films usually tank. When you look at the history of Laika releases, MissingLink saw a 30.1% drop, KuboAndTheTwoStrings fell 37.8%, ParaNorman slid 38.7%, TheBoxTrolls dipped 30.7%, and Coraline only dropped 12.3%. Wildwood has now hit a cumulative total of $27.4 million in the U.S. market. The hope is that strong word-of-mouth and awards season momentum will keep revenue flowing in both the U.S. and international markets while sales of international distribution rights add to the mix. These streams aim to recover at least part of the film's $100 million production budget, excluding marketing costs. Analysts are projecting a final U.S. run total between $45 million and $55 million.
