Early fighters for gay freedom pioneers

It is easy to forget that the fight for LGBTQ+ rights didn't just start with the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Long before that moment, people were already risking their freedom, careers, reputations, and lives to demand change. Karl Heinrich Ulrichs was one of those early public advocates who defended same-sex love back in 1867. Decades later, Harry Hay co-founded the Mattachine Society in 1950, establishing an early lasting gay rights organization in the US. Around the same time, Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon founded the Daughters of Bilitis in 1955, creating the first lasting lesbian rights organization in the US. Barbara Gittings organized early demonstrations and contributed significantly to removing homosexuality from the American Psychiatric Association's disorder list in 1973. Frank Kameny challenged federal employment discrimination against gay people and popularized the slogan 'Gay Is Good'. Christine Jorgensen gained international fame in the 1950s following gender-affirming surgery, which increased transgender visibility. James Baldwin used literature to explore same-sex love, identity, race, and sexuality during a time of heavy stigma. Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were iconic figures in LGBTQ+ liberation, especially for transgender and marginalized community members, during and after the Stonewall era. These pioneers refused to accept a world where LGBTQ+ people lived in silence, fear, and shame. Their courage enabled current progress. The post invites readers to suggest other early movement figures deserving inclusion.
