I was just 21 or 22 when he died, but that meant that I actually knew him quite well during my youth. And he had a house not far from ours in Tarrytown, New York. I used to go up and have breakfast with him quite often and just walk up the hill. And he was very informal, very warm. He loved having his grandchildren come to see him. And he would tell funny little stories that he remembered and sometimes sing some kind of song. The image that he created with me was very distant from the one that was written about him as a terrible predator and someone who'd done all kinds of things that were bad for the country. actually, I think that that was what he really was like. And I have to say that my own feeling, based on reading about him as well, is that the books that were written that were so critical of him missed the point that at a time when the oil industry was just beginning and there were a lot of small producers of oil, he was able to pull the industry together and admittedly created a monopoly, but the fact was that it made oil prices go down and made an industry great, which subsequently enabled the country to expand. So I have great admiration for him for what he did, as well as the fact that he was a loving and wonderful grandfather. Quite a different story than Ida Tarbell talked.
