Godfather of AI gave a warning so serious that he said, “If you slept well tonight, you may not have fully understood this lecture.” This 47-minute talk from Geoffrey Hinton is one of the most important AI lectures I’ve seen in the past few months, because it doesn’t just show how powerful these systems are becoming, it explains why most people still dramatically underestimate what is happening. Hinton is one of the researchers whose work on neural networks helped lay the foundation for modern AI, and after leaving Google, he began speaking much more openly about the risks and the speed at which these systems are improving. His message is uncomfortable because the gap between what AI can already do and how most people actually use it is enormous. A lot of people still open Claude, type one question, read the answer, close the tab, and assume they are already getting the full value from AI. In reality, they are probably using only a small fraction of what these models are capable of. The real shift happens when you stop treating AI like a smarter search box and start using it to: → reason through complex problems → analyze large amounts of information → iterate on ideas → build workflows → use tools → automate repetitive work → act more like an agent than a chatbot That is where the real advantage starts to appear. Most people already have access to extremely powerful AI models, but very few have learned how to use them at anything close to their full potential. Over the next few years, the gap between people who simply ask AI questions and people who know how to build entire workflows around it is going to become much more important.
