Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen on first meeting
di Freddenver: Patrick Stewart
Turns out Patrick Stewart and Ian Mckellen were both in the company at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford on haven, and Stewart figures their paths crossed in a green room that doubled as a cafe. McKellen backs him up on that. The catch is Stewart was too shy to actually say anything, so he just watched McKellen from a distance and came away impressed. McKellen's response is that he has no memory of Stewart staring at him in the canteen, and he floats Roger Rees as the more likely target. From there the talk moves to who was cast as Hurst in No Man's Land versus Spooner, and Stewart suspects that call got made pretty early on.

I must have met Ian McKellen in the green room which was served as a cafe at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon when we were both in the company but not in the same place. That's correct. And I was far too shy to speak with him so I guess I didn't actually meet him but I observed him from afar and was impressed. Well that's an exciting revelation because I don't remember you looking at me in the canteen. Ah, well, I did it surreptitiously. Yes, I was probably looking at Roger Rees or something like that. Yeah, very likely. With good cause, I might say. With good cause. From Alex, for you, I expected you to play Hurst in No Man's Land. Ah. That's the role that I play. Was that ever under consideration, or did you always know you'd be playing Spooner? I can't really tell you, but I suspect it was decided quite early on. with consult
