Bill Hader The Cat in the Hat improvisation
Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja say they love letting cast members improvise because it makes them look like better writers when actors come up with funnier stuff. Bill Hader performed extensive improvisation during voice recording sessions for The Cat in the Hat, portraying the title character while also playing the Cat impersonating others. He does a great Matt Berry impression and an impression of Alessandro that inspired the Italian chef character. The directors note some audio segments feature the Cat's voice played backward, created by Bill speaking in reverse rather than digital manipulation. They praise his significant control over vocal abilities, calling him a genius at doing different voices.

Working with such a comedic legend like Bill Hader, how much improvisation was there in the booth? Did that like inspire you guys to really go off the walls with him? Yeah, we love letting everyone improvise because it makes us look like better writers if they come up with funnier stuff than we have. But Bill is just such a genius, especially at doing different voices too. So he plays the cat in the hat, but he also plays the cat in the hat playing other characters. And that was all Bill. He does a great Matt Berry impression. He does a great impression of Alessandro. That's where the Italian chef comes from. And I always love to mention this thing. The book plays with time warping back and forth. And sometimes you hear the voice of the cat going forward, and then you hear the voice of the cat going backward. We didn't do that digitally. That's Bill Hader speaking backward. He truly can control his voice. He uses his tool in an incredible way.
