Madame X

Madonna moved to Lisbon in 2017 to support her son David Banda's football career and stumbled into a vibrant local music scene. The fado clubs of the city and Cape Verdean rhythms became the bedrock for her fourteenth studio album, which arrived on June 14, 2019 via Interscope Records. This release marked the end of her long-standing contract with the label before she returned to Warner Bros. Records in 2023.

The project centers on Madame X, a shape-shifting secret agent persona that allowed the artist to explore diverse musical identities and lyrical themes ranging from love and freedom to gun control and racism. Producers like Mirwais, Mike Dean, and Diplo helped craft a sonic landscape blending pop, Latin, fado, reggaeton, trap, and electronic sounds. Madonna sings in English, Spanish, and Portuguese across the record, featuring collaborations with Maluma, Quavo, Anitta, and Swae Lee.

Commercially, the album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, securing Madonna's ninth chart-topping album in the United States. It also reached the top spot in over 60 countries worldwide. The supporting tour played intimate theaters rather than large arenas, reinforcing the storytelling aspect of the concept. Critics praised the adventurous fusion of genres and the political depth of the lyrics, though some noted the eclectic nature might challenge casual listeners expecting a traditional pop record.
