Informazioni
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, commonly known as MIT, stands as a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Chartered on April 10, 1861, by an act of the state legislature, it emerged from the vision of natural scientist William Barton Rogers. He envisioned an institution dedicated to the practical application of science and engineering rather than just theoretical study. The Civil War delayed the start of classes until 1865, when 15 students began instruction in rented rooms in Boston's Back Bay. MIT moved to its present Cambridge campus in 1916, a relocation financed largely by a $2.5 million gift from Kodak founder George Eastman.
MIT's educational philosophy, the Rogers Plan, stressed learning by doing and the integration of professional training with liberal arts. This approach, modeled partly on the German polytechnic tradition, set MIT apart from the classical colleges of the era. Under President Karl T. Compton (1930–1948), the institute transformed from a respected technical school into a world-class research center. During World War II, MIT's Radiation Laboratory became the largest non-industrial R&D contractor in the nation, pioneering microwave radar. In the postwar period, the institute expanded into basic science, economics, and management, while maintaining its engineering core.
Today, MIT comprises five schools: Architecture and Planning; Engineering; Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; the Sloan School of Management; and Science. Its 166-acre campus stretches along the Charles River, with notable off-campus facilities including Lincoln Laboratory, Haystack Observatory, and the Broad and Whitehead Institutes. The institute is a member of the Association of American Universities. As of 2025, 105 Nobel laureates, 26 Turing Award winners, and 8 Fields Medalists have been affiliated with MIT. The university's commitment to open education is exemplified by MIT OpenCourseWare, launched in 2001, which freely publishes materials from nearly all its courses.
Missione
