"L'ambizioso portatile di Sony che non ha mai trovato il suo pubblico"

2011 PlayStation Vita Sony Interactive Entertainment

    Panoramica

Sony released the PlayStation Vita in Japan on December 17, 2011, aiming to create a high-end handheld that rivaled home consoles. The device arrived with a sleek design featuring dual analog sticks and a rear touchpad, setting it apart from the Nintendo 3DS. Its launch lineup included Uncharted: Golden Abyss, which showcased the system's graphical power against contemporaries like the Wii.

Commercial success remained elusive as the price of proprietary memory cards and rising smartphone popularity dampened sales. Sony pivoted to support independent developers, bringing titles like Hotline Miami and Shovel Knight to the platform. In Japan, the console found a stable niche among fans of JRPGs and visual novels, with Persona 4 Golden becoming the best-selling title.

The hardware received a refresh in 2013 with the PCH-2000 model, which swapped the OLED screen for an LCD panel to improve battery life and added internal storage. Despite these efforts, the Vita struggled to compete with the hybrid market shift led by the Nintendo Switch. Sony officially discontinued the system on March 1, 2019, leaving no direct successor.

    Gameplay

The Vita introduced dual analog sticks to the handheld market, allowing for precise control in third-person action games and shooters that were previously difficult to execute on D-pad-only systems. A 5-inch OLED touchscreen sat on the front, while a multi-touch pad behind the screen enabled unique interactions like poking through paper worlds in Tearaway. Developers could also tap the back of the device to interact with game elements without blocking the view.

Under the hood, a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU paired with 512 MB of RAM powered the system. This architecture supported tile-based deferred rendering via the PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU, delivering visuals that often surpassed the PlayStation 2. The native resolution reached 960x544 pixels, providing sharp images on the small display.

Connectivity features included Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and optional 3G support. The Near application allowed users to discover nearby players and share game data through proximity-based networking. Battery life typically lasted between 3 to 5 hours during demanding gameplay sessions.

    Storia

As a dedicated gaming platform, the Vita hosted a diverse array of narratives rather than following a single plotline. The library ranged from Western indie hits to Japanese role-playing epics. Persona 4 Golden stood out as the definitive version of the popular RPG, selling over 1.5 million units with its intricate mystery involving supernatural events. Other narrative-heavy entries included the visual novel mystery series Danganronpa and the whimsical adventure of Tearaway.

Western audiences saw strong support for action-adventure titles like Gravity Rush, which utilized gravity-manipulation mechanics. The system also became a haven for niche genres like visual novels in Japan, sustaining its lifecycle even after Western sales waned. These varied stories kept the community engaged long after the hardware was discontinued.
